I Became an Emotional Mess.

We all know that alcohol is a depressant. Simply put, alcohol wasn’t good for my mental health. 9 times out of 10, every time I had a drink, I ended up in tears. It didn’t matter if it was 1 drink or 3 drinks. And I didn’t just experience this while I was drinking. My sadness would linger on until the next day and throughout the remainder of the week.

Alcohol did not relieve my stress or help me relax like it does for many others. In fact, it magnified my stress levels. I would sit and have a glass of wine and end up thinking very deeply (and negatively) about everything that was going on in my world. It was not uncommon for me to have anxiety attacks during this time in my life.

I Experienced Frequent Nightmares.

You may have experienced a nightmare or two after drinking some cheap liquor or wine. For me, the nightmares just did not stop. No matter how little I drank or high quality the alcohol was, I kept having these deep, dark dreams. I even started acting out my dreams in my sleep. Pretty scary.

I decided to give up alcohol because it no longer served me. Click To Tweet

Alcohol Has No Nutritional Value.

Did you know that alcohol has no nutritional value? Yep. None. I realized that alcohol did not serve me in any way. It didn’t build me up. It didn’t make me feel beautiful. It didn’t nourish my body. It had no healing power. Alcohol was just empty calories. I decided that I’d rather save those calories for extra avocado on my salads. 🙂

I Wanted to Grow Spiritually.

Ultimately, I wanted to continue to grow in my walk with Christ. Alcohol was a stumbling block for me. The Bible tells us in ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:31‬ ‭NIV‬‬, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I was turning to alcohol for answers more than I was turning to God in prayer. I had to ask myself, how was going out for drinks bringing glory to God? It wasn’t. So, it had to go. Truthfully, I don’t miss it.
