Last weekend I attended Natural Products Expo East 2017 and was gifted 1 pound of organic hibiscus petals from Frontier Co-Op! It was so unexpected and timely as I’ve really been into floral notes lately. Hibiscus has so many healing properties! It is rich in antioxidants which helps to combat free radicals, boosts the immune system, improves your mood, lowers bad cholesterol, improves digestion and can even tighten and tone the skin! Although hibiscus petals can be used in all types of culinary dishes, my favorite way to use them is in herbal infusions.
1/2 cup of organic dried hibiscus flowers
1-2 organic oranges
6-7 organic basil leaves
16 oz of boiling water
Deep, stainless steel pot (with lid)
Wide-mouth, 32 oz glass jar (with lid)
- Bring your water to a boil while washing your oranges and basil. Pat basil dry and set aside. Cut oranges into very thin slices and place them in your pot. Next, add the hibiscus and basil.
- Pour the boiling hot water over the ingredients. Cover the pot and let everything steep until the water has cooled down.
- Once the tea has cooled, pour the tea over your mesh strainer into your glass jar. After straining, you may serve immediately, or cover and place your glass jar in the refrigerator. Once cold, serve over ice.
- Add fresh orange slices if desired.

*Hibiscus can be a bit tart for some. Feel free to add organic vanilla extract or organic coconut sugar to taste.
