Central Ohio was never the first place that came to mind when daydreaming of a weekend getaway. In a former life, I was a key holder at Victoria’s Secret. Their parent company L Brands, is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. I always heard stories of managers attending upscale, corporate trainings and empowerment events in Columbus, but never knew that this was a must-visit destination! Now, I see why my leadership team kept this hidden gem under wraps!
I recently visited Columbus for the first time with some fellow food writers, travel bloggers, and influencers. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Columbus is a diverse, health-conscious, and plant-based friendly city that is rich in culture. As a millennial, I felt right at home as the median age of residents is 30 to 33-years-old, and has remained this way for over ten years. In fact, it’s one of the top ten youngest cities in the United States. It’s also a really convenient travel destination as nearly 50% of Americans live within a 600-mile radius. Atlanta, Chicago, and New York city are all less than a day’s drive away. Below are 7 things that I tried and loved in this thriving city.

The Kitchen is Columbus’ first and only full-scale Participatory Dinner Experience. With the help of The Kitchen staff, and other guests in my party, I was able to create a beautiful plant-based meal. I am far from a novice in the kitchen, but still learned a thing or two during the dinner!
I started the second day of my trip with this Peppermint Blue Latte from Native Cold Pressed. Blue Majik algae, ashwagandha, coconut sugar, peppermint essential oil, and housemade cashew mylk. This was a great boost of energy without the caffeine!
I’ve been plant-based for about 7 years, so I can’t even tell you the last time I had traditional tartare! This gluten-free version is made from raw baby carrots, carrot greens, medjool dates, pistachio, and smoked paprika. Served with lavash crackers. No fish here! I skipped the chèvre cheese to make it dairy-free. Don’t you just love how colorful this plate is? Dish by Wolf’s Ridge Brewing.

I also ordered this Curry Cauliflower from Wolf’s Ridge Brewing. I love cauliflower because of its versatility. This particular dish contained curry roasted cauliflower, cauliflower romesco, lavash crackers, herb salad, green grapes, and crispy garbanzo beans. So filling! I loved the plating.
Did you know that Jeni’s was founded in Columbus? Here in Ohio’s state capital, you will find several brick and mortar Jeni’s locations. This Certified B corporation is dedicated to social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. A great addition to an already health-conscious and green city. Jeni’s has several dairy-free/vegan flavors. I opted for their Frosé sorbet, which tastes EXACTLY like rosé, with a little extra sweetness.
Now y’all know nightlife is not my thing. But when in Columbus…! I had a chance to check out the rooftop lounge at Lincoln Social and fell in love with the views and fire pits. It was very dark so I couldn’t grab the perfect shot of the cityscape. However, I did capture a photo with this very Instagram-worthy flower wall! It’s definitely worth popping in if you are in the Short North area.

Did you notice that I could not single out one dish at this restaurant? I was actually mad when I left Comune because I don’t know when I’ll be back in Columbus. Which also means I have no idea when I will be able to taste the Fresh Semolina Pappardelle ($22) again! I also loved the Tempura Cauliflower ($10), Bread + Spread ($13), Pantry Love ($6), and Stir-Fried Spaghetti Squash ($12).
If I could eat at this restaurant every day, I would. The food, the drinks, the ambiance, the service, the music! Comune does not owe me a thing! I’m so happy I was able to experience this restaurant with a group. We all ordered separate dishes and passed plates so we could taste more items on the menu. If you are a plant-based foodie DO NOT leave Columbus without dining at Comune.
